BJ (Broadcast Jockey)

비제이 / BJ

BJ stands for "Broadcast Jockey" and is the standard Korean word for an internet livestreamer or broadcaster. The term originated on AfreecaTV (rebranded as SOOP in 2024) and is now used broadly across Korean streaming culture, much as "streamer" is used in the West. A BJ hosts live broadcasts that can cover gaming, talk, music, eating shows, and dance, and earns income largely from viewer donations and platform subscriptions rather than advertising alone.

What does a dance BJ do?

A dance BJ is a broadcaster whose main content is dancing — typically cover dances of K-pop and viral songs performed live for viewers. On platforms such as SOOP and PandaTV, dance broadcasts are one of the most popular categories. Many dance BJs also join crews and seasonal competition programs.

Is "BJ" the same as a streamer?

Functionally yes. "BJ" is the platform-native Korean label; on newer services like CHZZK the more neutral word "streamer" is also common. The role — a live host monetized through gifts and subscriptions — is the same.
